In 2010, tragically more than 4,400 men will die as a direct result of prostate cancer.
Prostate cancer is the ninth-most-common cancer in the world, but is the number-one non-skin cancer in North American men.
Rates of prostate cancer in men are comparable to rates of breast cancer in women.
About 24,600 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year.
Over 90% of prostate cancer cases are curable if detected and treated in their earliest stages.
Prostate cancer is thought to be a potentially preventable cancer in many cases, but more research is needed and government support for this research is inadequate.
Hi, I'm Deron Staffen
This is the first moustache I've ever had. The first facial hair of any kind, actually. Well, I was growing that spot between my eyebrows out for a little while, because I was such a huge fan of Richard Grieco. But I gave up on that in the '90s after they cancelled 21 Jump Street.
I've been getting quite a bit of teasing about my moustache, from a group of people I like to refer to as "Everyone I Know". Some people have provided me with gentle advice, like, "Nice work! Now you should try growing a moustache." Others have asked if I stole my moustache from some high school kid when he wasn't looking. But I expected this from the outset, so I'm trying hard not to let the growing mockery on Facebook and Twitter get me down. However, I think the billboards in my neighbourhood proclaiming me to be a "Moustachioed Menace" might have gone a little too far, but mostly because that green guy in the trenchcoat from Sesame Street has been hanging around for days, trying to sell me an "M".
There's been one person, though, who's been overjoyed with this wild influx of facial hair, and that's my dad. It's always been difficult finding things for us to bond over, but if I'd known moustaches would be it, I might have tried this a long time ago. We spent over an hour on the phone talking about his various moustache grooming techniques and which famous moustache I should try to emulate ("Magnum PI had a great moustache. You should go for that one. I'll even give you my Detroit Tigers hat!"). He was also dropping so many hints about how I should expand things into a beard that if we replaced "goatee" with "grandchild", it was the same conversation I'd had the week before with my mother.
If I've learned one thing from this journey, it's "with great moustache comes great responsibility". And if I've learned one thing from Journey, it's "don't stop believin'". So I'm trying to uphold my responsibility to my moustache with this website, to spread the word far and wide, bringing those donations in for the Canadian Prostate Foundation. And I won't stop believin' that maybe this can be the little moustache that could. Maybe cultivating this tiny, ragged patch of hair on a heretofore barren upper lip will actually help make a difference in someone's life. And maybe, just maybe, with your support, I'll make it to November 30 without clawing my face off.
